Wecome to this site about adoption law dictionary
Adoption is a legal term for permanently placing a baby or older child with one or both parents who were not the actual biological parents. Adoption effectuates the severing of the parental responsibilities & rights of the birth parents and turning over those responsibilities and rights onto the adopters. A great number of children are placed for adoption due to the true birth parents' acknowlegement that they are unfortunately unable to adequately care for their baby or child. Some true biological parents forcibly are stripped of their parental rights and their child is placed in foster homes as they were neglected or even abused. A physical incapability to biologically have a child is a common cause given to adopt. A choice to adopt could also be accompanied by the lack of a spouse or partner or the desire not to use a sperm donor or surrogate. Single folks and same sex couples sometimes adopt for this reason. Processes for adopting a child deviate from one nation to another. Generally when applying to adopt, the potential adopters will be appraised for suitability and appropriateness.
Adopting from outside one's country usually are more expensive and frequently incur additional costs, such as the adoptive parents having to journey to the source country. Citizens of the U.S. represent the vast majority of international adoptive parents. A few large countries have comparatively well instituted laws and procedures for out of country adopters to meet, while others do not. Adoption policies & procedures for each country differ widely. The requirements needed to begin the process of adopting outside the country also differ widely, depending on the country of the adopters. In the U.S., as an example, usually the number one phase in the process is choosing an adoption facilitator or agency to work with. Every adoption agency or facilitator works with different countries, although other people focus only on a specific nation.
