Adoption is termed the legal act of permanently placing a baby or older child with a parent or parents other than the actual birth parents. Adoption results in the severing of the parental responsibilities and rights of the actual biological parents and giving over those rights and responsibilities onto the adoptive parents. A lot of children are placed for adoption because of the birth parents' acknowlegement that they are unfortunately unable to adequately take care of their baby, toddler or older child. Some true birth parents involuntarily are stripped of their parental rights and their kids are placed into foster homes as they were abused, abandoned or neglected. The physical incapability to reproduce biologically is a frequent basis for adopting. The desire to adopt could also be related to the lack of a partner of the opposite sex or a decision not to use a surrogate or sperm donor. Unmarried individuals and same sex couples very often adopt for this reason. Procedures for becoming an adoptive parent can be different from one country to another. Normally when going to adopt, any potential adoptive parents will be judged for suitability and appropriateness.

Adopting from outside one's country are often more costly and frequently incur further fees, like the adoptive parents being required to travel to the source country. Citizens of the U.S. represent the largest number of international adoptive parents. Many larger countries have reasonably well founded rules and procedures for out of country adopters to follow, while some don't. Adoption policies & procedures for each nation will differ widely.The conditions needed to start the process of adopting outside the country also deviate widely, depending on the country of the adopters. In the US, as a general example, generally the first stage of the process is selecting an agency or facilitator to deal with. Each adoption facilitator or agency works with a different group of countries, although a few focus all their energy on a specific country.
